Help Restore Alumni Voice
Alumni voice is worth fighting for. Here's how you can stay informed and help.
What is Senate Bill 110?
Senate Bill 110 would restore alumni-elected positions to the Indiana University Board of Trustees—the positions eliminated by the legislature in 2025.
If passed, alumni would once again have the right to elect trustees who answer to them, not to politicians. It's a return to the accountability that served IU well for over a century.
BILL STATUS
Did not receive a committee hearing. The bill's provisions could still be added as an amendment to other legislation.
WHAT IT DOES
- Restores alumni-elected trustee positions
- Re-establishes elections through the IU Alumni Association
- Returns accountability to the alumni community
SPONSORS
Senators Susan Glick and Greg Walker
Why It Matters
Alumni trustees bring something valuable to university governance: independence and genuine connection. They answer to fellow alumni, not to the politicians who appointed them. They carry perspectives shaped by their own IU experiences as students, as graduates, as people whose lives were shaped by this university.
Senate Bill 110 would restore that perspective to IU's leadership, reconnecting the university to the alumni who helped build it.

Vasel v. Braun: The Constitutional Challenge
In May 2025, I filed suit as the lead plaintiff in Vasel v. Braun, challenging the constitutionality of eliminating alumni-elected trustee positions.
The lawsuit, supported by the ACLU of Indiana, raises important questions about how this change was implemented. Together with the legislative effort through Senate Bill 110, it represents a path toward restoring alumni voice in university governance.
